MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter Strengthens Indian Navy

Context:

Recently, The Indian Navy has received another MH-60R Seahawk multi-role naval helicopter from the United States, strengthening India’s anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance capabilities. The latest delivery at Kochi has increased the total number of MH-60R helicopters received by India to 21 out of the 24 ordered under a $946 million Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement with the United States.

About MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter:

      • The MH-60R Seahawk, also known as the “Romeo”, is an advanced multi-mission naval helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, a division of Lockheed Martin. Developed for the U.S. Navy, it is among the world’s most advanced maritime helicopters.
      • The helicopter is designed mainly for:
        • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
        • Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW)
        • Maritime surveillance
        • Search and rescue operations
        • Medical evacuation and communication support

Key Features and Specifications:

      • The MH-60R Seahawk has several advanced features:
        • Maximum Speed: Around 333 km/h (180 knots)
        • Operational Range: Approximately 830 km
        • Primary Weapons: Mk 54 lightweight torpedoes and AGM-114 Hellfire missiles
        • Sensors: Dipping sonar, sonobuoys, advanced radar and electro-optical systems
      • These systems enable the helicopter to detect, track and engage underwater as well as surface threats effectively.

Strategic Importance for India:

      • Enhancing Anti-Submarine Warfare Capability: The helicopter significantly improves India’s ability to detect and counter hostile submarines. With increasing submarine activity in the Indian Ocean, advanced ASW platforms are essential for protecting naval assets and maintaining maritime dominance.
      • Protection of Naval Fleets: The MH-60R can operate from warships such as destroyers, frigates and aircraft carriers. It provides an additional layer of defence by protecting high-value naval platforms from underwater threats.
      • Improving Maritime Domain Awareness: Equipped with advanced sensors and surveillance systems, the Seahawk enhances India’s ability to monitor activities across its maritime zones, including vital sea lanes and strategic areas.
      • India-U.S. Defence Cooperation:
      • The MH-60R acquisition highlights deepening defence ties between India and the United States. Both countries cooperate in areas such as maritime security, defence technology and joint military exercises like Malabar.
      • The deal also supports cooperation under the Quad framework, which focuses on maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Conclusion:

The induction of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters is a major step in modernising the Indian Navy and strengthening India’s maritime security capabilities. While the platform enhances India’s ability to respond to underwater threats, long-term strategic autonomy requires greater focus on indigenous defence manufacturing and technology development.
