INS Samarthak Inducted into the Indian Navy

Context:

INS Samarthak, an indigenously built Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), was inducted into the Indian Navy on 16 October 2026 at Karwar, Karnataka. Its induction highlights India's progress towards defence indigenisation and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

About INS Samarthak:

INS Samarthak has been built by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at its Kattupalli Shipyard in Tamil Nadu. The project is part of a ₹887 crore contract signed with the Ministry of Defence on 25 March 2022 under the Buy (Indian) category. The vessel incorporates more than 75% indigenous content, reflecting India's commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

It measures 107 metres in length, has a displacement exceeding 3,750 tonnes, can attain a maximum speed of 15 knots and has an approximate range of 4,500 nautical miles. INS Utkarsh is the second vessel in the project. The name Samarthak means “The Proponent” or “Supporter”, while its motto is “Victory is Our Sole Aim” (Vijayartham Ekanishthata).

Roles and Capabilities:

INS Samarthak is a versatile platform designed to undertake multiple naval missions. Its major functions include:

·       Weapons and sensor trials: Testing and evaluating indigenous weapons, sensors and combat systems.

·       Maritime surveillance: Supporting reconnaissance and offshore patrolling.

·       Unmanned systems: Acting as a mothership for unmanned aerial and surface vehicles.

·       HADR: Providing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief.

·       Other operations: Supporting towing, salvage, pollution response and limited medical assistance.

Significance for India:

Defence Indigenisation: Domestic construction reduces reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthens India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Private-Sector Participation: L&T's contribution demonstrates the growing role of private companies in naval shipbuilding, promoting innovation, skilled employment and industrial development.

Maritime Security: The vessel can support surveillance and operational preparedness in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), which is crucial for protecting sea lines of communication, trade and energy supplies.

Indigenous Technology Testing: INS Samarthak provides a platform for testing domestically developed weapons, sensors and unmanned systems, helping improve their operational effectiveness.

Conclusion:

The induction of INS Samarthak represents an important step towards a self-reliant defence sector. By strengthening indigenous shipbuilding, encouraging private-sector participation and enhancing maritime preparedness, India can improve its strategic autonomy and safeguard its interests in the Indian Ocean Region.
