On 21 August 2026, the Indian Navy received ‘Mangrol’, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi. The induction strengthens India’s capability to detect and counter underwater threats in shallow and coastal waters.
What is ASW-SWC?
An Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft is a specialised naval vessel designed to detect, track and engage submarines in littoral waters. These compact “pocket warships” are particularly useful where larger destroyers and frigates face limitations due to shallow depths and complex underwater conditions.

About ASW-SWC Programme:
The Indian Navy’s ASW-SWC programme envisages 16 vessels, with eight being constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and eight by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
The CSL-built vessels form the Mahe class, while the GRSE-built vessels form the Arnala class. The programme is aimed at replacing ageing platforms and enhancing the Navy’s specialised shallow-water warfare capabilities.

Naming Significance:
Mangrol is named after the coastal town and minor port of Mangrol in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. The name also carries forward the legacy of the erstwhile INS Mangrol, an Indian Navy minesweeper that served until 2004.
