Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Prachet

Context:

Recently, Samudra Prachet’, the second and final indigenously built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), was launched for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in Goa on 23 July 2025. With 72 per cent indigenous content, the vessel reflects a strong push towards Aatmanirbharta in defence productio.

Key Features of 'Samudra Prachet':

The 'Samudra Prachet' is designed to respond to oil spills and other pollutants in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

With a length of 114.5 meters, a breadth of 16.5 meters, and a displacement of 4,170 tonnes, the ship will be manned by 14 officers and 115 sailors.

Equipment it will carry:

·         Two side-sweeping arms to collect oil spills while underway

·         Modern radar system to detect oil slicks

·         Equipment to recover oil of various viscosities

·         Facilities to pump in, analyse, and separate contaminated water

·         Dedicated tanks for recovered oil
