Global Passport Index 2026: India Slips to 125th

Why in News:

Recently, India has slipped to the 125th position in the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026, published by Global Citizen Solutions. The ranking evaluates passports based on mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life indicators, beyond just visa-free travel access.

About Global Passport Index:

The Global Passport Index is an annual ranking of passports from 197 countries. Unlike traditional passport indices that focus mainly on visa-free travel, GPI uses a broader framework.

It evaluates passports across three major dimensions:

    • Enhanced Mobility (50%) – visa-free travel, travel ease, and global access
    • Investment Index (25%) – business opportunities, taxation, and economic freedom abroad
    • Quality of Living Index (25%) – healthcare, education, safety, and social conditions

These are further based on 14 indicators measuring global mobility and living standards.

India’s Performance in 2026:

India ranked 125th out of 197 countries, slipping one position from the previous year.

Key highlights:

      • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 26 countries
      • Stronger performance in non-travel dimensions:
        • 94th in Investment Index (improved by 3 positions)
        • 118th in Quality of Living Index (improved by 11 positions)
      • Overall composite score reached a five-year high of 45.1

Despite improvements in certain areas, India’s overall mobility score remains low due to limited visa-free access to major global destinations.

Global and Regional Trends:

      • Singapore is the only Asian country in the global top 20
      • Other top Asian passports include Japan, South Korea, UAE, and Hong Kong
      • European countries dominate the top 10, reflecting stronger mobility and diplomatic agreements

India’s regional comparison:

      • China: 104th
      • Bhutan: 132nd
      • Sri Lanka: 141st
      • Nepal: 164th
      • Bangladesh: 166th
      • India: 125th

India ranks 29th among Asian countries in the index.

Why India’s Ranking is Low:

Several structural factors contribute to India’s lower position:

      • Limited visa-free travel agreements with developed countries
      • Stringent immigration policies in Western nations
      • Economic and security-related visa restrictions
      • Lower global mobility score compared to developed economies

Although India has strong diplomatic ties globally, these have not yet translated into widespread visa-free access.

Conclusion:

India’s position at 125th in the Global Passport Index highlights both challenges in global mobility and gradual improvements in investment and quality-of-life parameters. While visa-free access remains limited, India’s rising economic profile and diplomatic outreach could help improve its global mobility standing in the coming years.
