E-Hansa

Context:

India has taken a major step towards green aviation with the launch of the E-Hansa project—an indigenously developed electric trainer aircraft. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, during a monthly review meeting held in New Delhi.

About E-Hansa:

The E-Hansa is part of the HANSA-3 Next Generation (NG) programme, which focuses on creating affordable and indigenous aircraft for pilot training across the country. With the aviation industry in India expanding rapidly, there is growing demand for qualified pilots. E-Hansa aims to support this need by offering a cost-effective and locally made alternative to imported trainer aircraft.

One of the key goals of the project is to reduce India’s dependence on foreign aviation technology while supporting the training of pilots for both Private Pilot License (PPL) and Commercial Pilot License (CPL).

Features and Design Highlights

·        The E-Hansa features an Advanced Glass Cockpit, which provides a modern digital display and enhances situational awareness for the pilot.

·        It is powered by a Rotax 912 iSc3 Sport Engine, known for its fuel efficiency and digital control, making the aircraft both smart and economical.

·        The aircraft includes a Bubble Canopy, offering panoramic visibility and improved comfort for pilots during training.

·        A lightweight composite airframe and electrically operated flaps further contribute to better performance and easier handling.

Significance:

  • The E-Hansa will help develop domestic aviation capabilities.
  • E-Hansa is expected to be significantly more affordable than imported counterparts, with a projected cost of around ₹2 crore—roughly half the price of similar foreign models.
