DRDO Successfully Conducts Flight Test of Pralay Missile

Context:

Recently, The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the flight test of the indigenously developed Pralay quasi-ballistic missile on 5 November 2026. All test objectives were successfully achieved, paving the way for its imminent induction into the armed forces.

What is the Pralay Missile?

      • Pralay is an indigenous, solid-propellant, surface-to-surface quasi-ballistic missile developed by DRDO. It is designed to destroy enemy military installations, airbases, command centres and other strategic targets. Its reported operational range is approximately 150–500 km. It can carry multiple types of conventional warheads and uses advanced guidance and navigation systems to ensure high precision. It is also designed for deployment through mobile launch platforms.
      • Pralay was developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. Its development project was sanctioned in March 2015, and its first flight tests were conducted in December 2021. Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) are among its development-cum-production partners.

What is a Quasi-Ballistic Missile?

Unlike conventional ballistic missiles, which follow a relatively predictable trajectory, quasi-ballistic missiles follow a lower and flatter flight path and possess manoeuvring capabilities. This makes their trajectory less predictable and creates challenges for enemy missile defence systems. Thus, Pralay enhances India's precision-strike capabilities.

Strategic Significance for India:

Pralay strengthens India's conventional deterrence by providing an effective precision-strike capability. It enhances the operational preparedness of the Indian Army and Indian Air Force and provides flexibility in responding to emerging security threats. Its indigenous development reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and promotes domestic defence manufacturing, research and innovation. It also strengthens India's strategic autonomy in the regional security environment.

Conclusion:

The successful testing of Pralay represents an important milestone in India's indigenous defence development. It advances the objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India while strengthening national security. Continued investment in defence research and innovation is essential for achieving strategic autonomy and establishing India as a technologically advanced defence power.
