Topic Description:
According to a report released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute earlier this week, India’s arms imports fell 33 % between 2011-15 and 2016-20. India accounted for 9.5% of the total global arms imports during 2016- 2020. The country’s top three arms suppliers during this period were Russia (49%), France (18%) and Israel (13%), followed by the United States in the fourth place. The report said although Russia was the most affected supplier, India’s arms imports from the US also fell by 46%. So what are the reasons that the report has attributed to the fall in Indian arms imports and what it means for India’s defence sector.
