Observed on the first Monday of October every year since 1985, the day reflects on the state of human settlements and the basic right to sufficient shelter worldwide.

World Habitat Day supports the United Nations' Habitat mission towards transformative change in cities and human settlements, i.e. to leave no one and no place behind.

This year’s Global Observance of World Habitat Day is being held in Mexico. The theme this time is “Frontier Technologies as an innovative tool to transform waste to wealth”. Building on last year's theme of “Municipal Solid Waste Management”, the purpose this year is to shift focus beyond solid waste and encompass all kinds of waste that have a devastating impact on climate change, public health and the environment.
