Topic: Vice President's Visit to Baltic Nations

Topic Description:

In recent years, Indian foreign policy has undergone some significant changes. One such change has been India's efforts in reaching out to smaller states, especially in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe.

This is very much in line with prime minister Narendra Modi's view that not only the smaller countries are as important as larger ones but they also needed an independent focus.

Recent increase in the frequency of high-level contacts between India and Baltic states can be traced to this.

It is also against this context that Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday concluded his 5-day tour to the three important Baltic nations Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.

The visit was aimed at strengthening the bilateral engagements with the three nations, besides also giving the relationships a fresh impetus in the context of a changing global order.

Besides considering the strategic interests, the focus of the visit was also on improving cooperation in the fields of security, especially countering terrorism. The Vice President's visit was aslo specially proved significant in improving cultural exchanges
