Topic: Unrest in Hong Kong

Topic Description:

For the last 10 weeks, a wave of mass protests and demonstrations have been sweeping Hong Kong.

The City state has seen protests in the past on account of its conflict with China. But the current unrest is the most serious one till date.

The last few days have seen 748 people being arrested, 115 being put in jails.

Mobs have attacked police stations 76 times and there have been five suicides by the demonstrators.

As millions of people joined these protests, the city airport had to be even shut down briefly on August 13th

So far the protests have been largely peaceful but two days ago in an alarming decision, the authorities called for armored troops Although it was a part of Chinese territory, Hong Kong became a colony of the British in the 19th century. It stayed that way for over 150 years, till it was handed over to China in 1997.

But even today it has its own political system, cultural identity and currency.
