Topic: Supreme Court Guidelines

Topic Description:

On Friday, the country woke up to news of the killing of the four accused in the Hyderabad rape and murder case.

The Telangana police said all the accused were taken to the scene of the crime for a reconstruction of events as part of their investigation. The four men, reportedly snatched weapons from the policemen, opened fire and tried to flee. The police resorted to retaliatory firing and killed them all.

Coming against the backdrop of a growing outrage in the country over the rising incidents of crimes against women, the encounter of the four men in Hyderabad has been welcomed by political leaders, public figures and the masses.

But at the same time, questions have also been raised over the legality and propriety of the police action.

For years, extra-judicial killings, also referred to as encounters, have been a contested and divisive police procedure.

The National Human Rights Commission and the Supreme Court have also spoken about the proper procedures that must be followed during such action by police.
