December 16 marks a chapter in history that binds India and its neighbours Bangladesh and Pakistan It was on this day in 1971 that India won a war against Pakistan.

In the process it freed Bangladesh from Pakistan.

On this day 48 years ago, Pakistan lost half its country, its forces in the East, and had to publicly surrender to India.

The military confrontation between India and Pakistan started when Pakistan attacked 11 Indian airbases.

This was also the first time in which all three forces of India fought in unison.

The war ended after the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93,000 troops, surrendered to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora, General Officer Commanding-in –chief of the Indian and Bangladesh forces in the eastern theatre.
