After nearly six months of violent protests and unrest, voters in Hong Kong delivered a landslide for pro-democracy candidates in local elections.

17 of the 18 councils that have historically been in the grip of a Beijing-aligned establishment, have been won by pro-democracy councillors.

The results of the otherwise low key council elections are being seen as a powerful show of solidarity with the city’s pro-democracy movement and a rebuke to the government over its handling of the months of escalating violence.

Post the stunning rout, Carrie Lam, the embattled chief executive of vowed to humbly listen to voters in the semi-autonomous territory.

China maintained its stance, reiterating that no matter what happens, Hong Kong is and shall be a part of China.
