Hong Kong was already reeling from political discord and recession. Now the new Coronavirus outbreak is fanning global isolation and worsening mistrust between citizens and their leaders. Thousands of health care and hospital workers went on strike this week, demanding the closure of all of Hong Kong’s borders with mainland China. However Chief Executive Carrie Lam has said that the ‘almost unique’ relationship between Hong Kong and mainland China would make a total shutdown too disruptive and discriminatory. Hong Kong has now begun mandatory two-week quarantine for anyone arriving from mainland China. The city has seen 26 confirmed cases of the virus and one person has died. The number of confirmed cases in mainland China stands at close to 35 thousand with 722 deaths.
