KAVACH Version 4.0

Context:

Recently, KAVACH Version 4.0 was commissioned for the first time on September 23, 2026, on the South Central Railway (SCR). The upgrade from Version 3.2 to 4.0 covers 108 Route Kilometres on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of Hyderabad Division.

What is KAVACH?

KAVACH is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system developed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) in collaboration with Indian industry.

It uses trackside and onboard equipment, including Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, to continuously monitor train movement and automatically activate braking when necessary.

Key Functions

  • Prevents Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD).
  • Provides continuous speed supervision.
  • Helps prevent head-on and rear-end collisions.
  • Displays signal aspects and movement authority in the locomotive cab.
  • Controls overspeeding.
  • Provides protection during poor visibility and adverse weather.
  • Meets SIL-4 (Safety Integrity Level-4) standards, the highest level of railway safety integrity.

About KAVACH 4.0:

KAVACH 4.0 incorporates technological improvements based on experience gained from deploying Version 3.2 over 1,465 route kilometres on South Central Railway.

Major Improvements

1.    Greater location accuracy for precise train positioning.

2.    Improved signal identification, particularly in large railway yards.

3.    Station-to-station connectivity through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC).

4.    Direct integration with Electronic Interlocking Systems.

These features can improve reliability, situational awareness and coordination between signalling infrastructure and trains.

Other Technological Interventions

Railway safety is increasingly supported by complementary technologies:

  • Real-Time Train Information System (RTIS): Uses satellite-based technology for real-time train tracking.
  • AI-based monitoring: Can assist in detecting loco-pilot fatigue and distraction.
  • Network Management Systems (NMS): Support centralised monitoring and communication.
  • OFC networks: Strengthen digital signalling and railway communication.

Persistent Challenges

Despite long-term improvement in railway safety, several systemic concerns remain:

1.    Human-resource shortages can increase workload and fatigue among safety personnel.

2.    Network congestion reduces the availability of maintenance blocks.

3.    Ageing infrastructure and deferred asset renewal can increase safety risks.

4.    KAVACH deployment remains limited compared with India's vast railway network.

5.    Large-scale deployment requires equipment, communication infrastructure, skilled manpower and substantial investment.

Global Railway Safety Systems

India's KAVACH can be compared with major international ATP systems:

Sam Pitroda Committee on Railway Modernisation

The 2012 Expert Group on Railway Modernisation, headed by Sam Pitroda, proposed major reforms, including:

  • Mechanised track maintenance.
  • Train Protection Warning Systems.
  • Elimination of unmanned level crossings.
  • Wheel Impact Load Detectors.
  • Modernisation of workshops and coaching depots.
  • Creation of a Railway Regulatory Authority.
  • Greater use of technology for railway safety and monitoring.

Significance:

KAVACH 4.0 can contribute to safer, more reliable and technology-driven railway operations. Wider deployment can strengthen automatic protection while reducing dependence on human intervention during critical situations.

Conclusion:

The transition to KAVACH 4.0 represents an important step towards modernising India's railway safety architecture. Its wider deployment, combined with signalling upgrades, track maintenance and institutional reforms, can support a safer and more resilient railway network.
