INS Mahendragiri: Project 17A Nilgiri-Class Frigate

Context:

Recently, The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mahendragiri, the sixth Project 17A (Nilgiri-class) stealth frigate, into the Eastern Fleet at Visakhapatnam on 11 July 2026. 

About INS Mahendragiri:

INS Mahendragiri is an advanced stealth guided missile frigate equipped with modern weapons and technologies such as:

      • BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles
      • Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile systems
      • Advanced radar and electronic warfare systems
      • Anti-submarine warfare capabilities

What is Project 17A?

      • Project 17A (Nilgiri-class frigates) is an Indian Navy programme under which seven advanced stealth guided missile frigates are being constructed at an estimated cost of around ₹45,000 crore.
      • These warships have been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB). They are advanced follow-on ships of the Project 17 Shivalik-class frigates.

Construction:

      • Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai is constructing 4 ships.
      • Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata is constructing 3 ships.

With more than 75% indigenous content, the project promotes the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. It involves participation from more than 200 Indian industries and MSME units.

The Nilgiri-class frigates are equipped with advanced capabilities, including:

      • Stealth technology
      • BrahMos supersonic missiles
      • Barak-8 Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missiles
      • Advanced radar systems
      • Electronic warfare systems
      • Anti-submarine warfare capabilities

These warships use a CODOG (Combined Diesel or Gas) propulsion system and an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for efficient and effective operations.

Strengthening Blue-Water Navy:

INS Mahendragiri enhances India’s maritime capabilities and enables India to:

        • Protect its maritime interests in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
        • Conduct long-duration overseas naval deployments.

Boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in Defence:

With around 75% indigenous content, it highlights India’s progress in the defence manufacturing sector.

It is equipped with advanced sensors, weapon systems, and electronic warfare technologies.
