- “Digital arrest” is a cyber-extortion scam in which fraudsters impersonate officials from agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED), or Reserve Bank of India (RBI). They use spoofed calls and fake credentials to deceive victims and gain their trust by posing as legitimate law enforcement authorities.
- In this modus operandi, victims are falsely accused of serious crimes like money laundering or drug trafficking and are kept under constant video call surveillance, creating a fake sense of “virtual custody.” The scammers apply psychological pressure by showing fabricated FIRs and arrest warrants, eventually coercing victims into transferring money into mule accounts under the guise of “verification” or “security.” Importantly, Indian law does not recognize any concept of digital or virtual arrest.
