Border Road Organization (BRO)
- The Border Roads Organization (BRO) is a road construction executive force in India that provides support to and is a part of the Indian Armed Forces.
- It works under Ministry of Defence since 2015.
- It is staffed by officers and troops drawn from the Indian Army’s Corps of Engineers, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Army Service Corps, Military Police and army personnel on extra regimental employment.
- Currently, the organization maintains operations in twenty-one states, one UT (Andaman and Nicobar Islands), and neighboring countries such as Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.
Projects of BRO
Himank, also known as Project HIMANK, is a project of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the Ladakh region of northernmost India that started in August 1985.
Under the Himank project, BRO is responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads and related infrastructure in Ladakh along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), including some of world's highest motorable roads across the Khardung La, Tanglang La and Chang La passes.
