Recently the Oscar awards were held on the 9th of February at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The 2020 Oscars award this year was the 92nd in its series. This year Oscar was very special as it honored a non-English film Parasite with the Best Picture Award. This year’s award ceremony went host less for a second year in row.
In this DNS we will know about the Oscar awards, its history and the winners of this year.
The Oscar also known as the Academy Awards. It is a set of awards given for artistic and technical merit in the American film industry. The award is given annually by the Academy of Motion picture Arts and Science. The first Academy award was held in the year 1929 in California. They acknowledge the excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the academy’s voting membership. The award winners in different categories are awarded a copy of golden statuette, officially called the Academy Award of Merit, commonly known as Oscar.
Now coming on to this year’s Academy awards For the Best Actress , Renee Zellweger for her role in the film Judy. For the Best Actor –Joaquin Phoenix for the movie Joker. In the Best Director category Bong Joon Ho was awarded for ‘Parasite’. The Best Original song title was given to Elton John for ‘I’m Gonna Love Me Again’, ‘Rocketman’. The Best screenplay Adapted was given to Jojo Rabbit. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, received the award for Achievement in Production Design.
Best supporting Actor awards was given to Brad Pitt for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. For Best Actress in Supporting Role –Laura Dern for her film Marriage story. The movie Parasite was awarded with 4 awards in different categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. Parasite is the first non-English film to win Best picture awards in the history of 92 Academy Award’s. It is a South Korean Movie with its theme based on Classic satire.
The second movie to grab the most number of awards is 1917. It bagged three awards in different categories of Cinematography, Visual Effects and Sound Mixing.
The movie Ford Vs Ferrari received two Oscars in the categories of Film editing and Sound editing.
In the category of Best Animated film “Toy Story 4” was given the award. The Best Documentary (Feature) was given to American Factory, and the Best Documentary (short film) was presented to “Learning to Skate Board in a war Zone”.
Now coming to Indian films, this year India’s official entry for Oscar was the movie “Gully Boy”. This film was directed by Zoya Akhtar featuring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. This was not the first time for India to submit its nominations for the Academy Awards for Best Feature Film. India has been forwarding films for the Oscar since 1957. Till now, none of the Indian film have won under the category of Best foreign Film. Although Indian themes had dominated in Oscar ceremony and won awards at the prestigious awards ceremony (for example, Gandhi and Slumdog Millionaire), very few Indians have walked away with the Golden statue. A. R RAHMAN, Bhanu Athaiya , Satyajit Ray, Resul Pokutty and Gulzar are the few fortunate Indians to have won the Oscar in various categories.
