Role of Humanism in Addressing Contemporary Global Issues - Daily Current Affair Article


In a recent statement given by the Indian Prime Minister in the India-Japan Dialogue, it has been said that humanism will be given importance in the policy-making of India-Japan relations.


  • The Indian Prime Minister made his statement at the recently held India-Japan Dialogue. In this statement, the Prime Minister has accepted humanism as the core of the policy framework of India-Japan relations.
  • In this dialogue, the Prime Minister has announced the creation of a library to increase the People to People contact between India and Japan. This library will be related to Buddhism.
  • The Prime Minister has also said that the library will also research how the teachings of Buddhism and the philosophy of humanism will be relevant in addressing today's global challenges.

What is humanism?

  • Humanism is the branch of philosophy in which philosophical interpretation has been done with the human as the center. In humanism, experience and logic have been considered as the basis of human development, instead of supernatural powers. It also considers humans responsible for building their luck.
  • It originated during Renaissance period.
  • Humanism as a whole is a set of moral values, materialistic approaches, political Ideals, and epistemological philosophies that indicate human interests, values , and human dignity.

Philosophy of Humanism: -

  • Humanism gives importance to human experience and reasoning intelligence in its epistemology. Based on logic, epistemology accepts the prohibition of all differentiation artificially and favors scientific advancement.
  • Metaphysics of humanism accepts nature as the ultimate authority of the universe. It does not accept God as the creature. It paves the way for the conservation of natural resources.
  • The Ethical dimension of humanism forbids supernatural power. It indicates the welfare and well-being of humans as well as mankind as the goal of human life. To achieve this goal, human beings should not consider any person's nationality, gender, caste, and color as the basis, thus humanism discriminates against the above grounds. In this sequence, it promotes international fraternity.

Humanism as the solutions of the contemporary global issues:-


  • Today the whole world is facing the wrath of terrorism. Many countries including India, America, France are affected by terrorist activities. The recent events in France, increased the tension of the whole world. In the current era, terrorism has become a major problem for the whole world. Terrorism due to religious frenzy has become the most prevalent terrorism. Humanism prohibits religion and class for the welfare of man and humanity. In this way, the spread of humanism in the whole world can reduce the problem of terrorism.


  • Today's world also suffers from the problem of racism. The whole of humanity has been ashamed by the incident of racism in America some time ago. Racial attacks on people of Asia and Africa including Indians in places like America, Britain, France, Canada, etc. is a matter of concern for the whole world. Humanism prohibits racism for the universal development of man.

Gender discrimination

  • The entire world including India is suffering from gender discrimination even in this phase of the 21st century. According to recently published data, it has been found that the participation of women in the top deciding body set up during COVID, has been around a quarter (around 25%). This problem is evident all over the world including India.
  • Humanism prohibits gender discrimination in the way of human development. Humanism advocates for gender equality.

Environmental concerns

  • In today's time, environmental problems and climate change have become a matter of concern for all. Representatives from all over the world, including India, strive to prevent climate change. After industrialization, the increased percentage of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is becoming extremely hazardous to the environment. The increased concentration of greenhouse gases is leading to the problem of ozone layer degradation. Climate changes are causing agricultural problems, pollution problems, reduction in groundwater. This problem is harmful to humans.
  • Humanism in its element epistemology considers nature to be the basis of the creation of the world. Thus, the preservation of nature has been given importance in humanism.

The spread of democracy:

  • Many struggles have been seen in a different part of the world for democracy Examples: Disputes in China and Hong Kong, Conflict in Thailand. Humanism has been considered as the unit of power and society in a democracy. Humanism is a strong supporter of democracy.
  • Thus after accepting humanism, these conflicts will surely reduce.

Global Peace

  • Today, conflicts on religion, caste, sovereignty, regionalism, is omnipresent. Countries like India, Russia, China, the USA, UK are focused on these subjects. The ethical dimension of humanism promotes international fraternity.


  • Epistemology of humanism prohibits man-made discrimination based on race, gender, caste, religion, and class. At the same time, the metaphysics of humanism supports naturalism.
  • Ethics of humanism seeks to increase international harmony by recognizing the personal and universal development of human beings. The placing of humanism as the core of their relations with India and Japan will aid the spread of humanism because both these countries are of great importance in the present world.
