Why in News?

On 29th August (National Sports Day) Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the 'Fit India' saying that the initiative is the need of the hour and will take the country towards a healthier future.

The 'Fit India Movement' is aimed at bringing about behavioural changes and introducing basic fitness practices in the daily lives of Indians, a majority of whom lack access to sports or fitness infrastructure in their neighbourhoods. ‘Fit India Movement’ is an effort to bring small lifestyle changes for a better future.

Need of the Movement:

A committee comprising government officials, members of Indian Olympic Association (IOA), national sports federations, private bodies and fitness promoters has been formed to advise the government on the campaign.

  • Cases of diabetes and hypertension are on the rise and even common among children in India. But small lifestyle changes can prevent these lifestyle diseases.
  • The risk of heart attack increases after the age of 50-60, now the youth of 35-40 years are having heart attack.
  • World Health Organization (WHO) statistics say one in four adults globally is not active enough, while more than 80% of the world’s adolescent population is insufficiently physically active.
  • The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has estimated that the proportion of deaths due to Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) has increased from 37.09% in 1990 to 61.8% in 2016.
  • WHO blames unhealthy diet and lack of physical activity for increasing instances of high blood pressure, increase in blood glucose, elevated blood lipids and obesity.
  • In India, the Global Disease Burden (GBD) 2015 ranks chronic kidney disease as the eighth leading cause of death.

Importance of the Fit India Movement:

Fitness, both physical and mental, is very important for overall well-being. Fitness improves quality of life and increases longevity. Fit people are healthy and more active.

  • The 'Fit India Movement' doesn't just highlight the indispensable need for physical fitness, it marks a conscious effort to make a shift in the common attitude among Indians to consider engagement in sports as an activity beyond recreation.
  • The increased use of technology in our lives has made our life easier in every way but it has made our lives sedentary. The ‘Fit India Movement’ would encourage people to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Increasing stress and inactive lifestyle is making people prone to diabetes, hypertension, etc. 'Fit India Movement' can help people to consume healthy food and to maintain physical and mental fitness.
  • ‘Fit India Movement' will make children and their families aware of the negative consequences of junk food. This would lead to the consumption of healthy food.
  • The Fit India Movement also emphasizes that sports is more than an extra-curricular activity. This is a positive effort by the government to bring sports in to the mainstream.
  • Fitness also reduces the risk of mental disorders like depression and anxiety. Besides, physical fitness increases the activity levels in later years which increase overall mental health.
  • Regular exercise and sports boosts muscle strength, bone density and general flexibility.

Fitness is the need of the hour. A healthy individual, a healthy family and a healthy society are the essentials to make New India- a Fit India.
